Inside the Rattery
We take our privacy very seriously. We operate a 'closed rattery', as most breeders do. This is to ensure the continued health and safety of our rats (as well as the humans!).
For this reason, in order to adopt from us, you must reserve specific rats that you find on our website. You can find our rats on the Available Now page, or in The Nursery. When its time for pick up, we opt to meet at a designated public location near our home. We have several reasons for this:
1) Our address is private, to maintain our privacy. We are hobby breeders; and are not doing this as a replacement to our normal jobs. We are not a pet shop.
2) Humans can be pretty crazy. Back in my days of animal rescue (both wildlife & domestic), I can't count on two hands the number of times we arrived on site to find an animal tied, tethered or boxed outside the door. This is something I'm unwilling to risk happening at my personal home.
3) Germs, disease and bacteria can be transmitted to/from rats by both direct and indirect exposure. We love our rats and do not want to risk them being exposed to outside things such as (but not limited to) mites, lice, fleas, ticks or transmissible disease. Rats, as we all know, are a vector species. This is not something worth the risk. Even something as seemingly benign as wearing the same clothing that one wore while handling their own pets at home can prove devastating to a rat mischief.
*To surmise, we do not offer the 'pet store experience'.*
Just because we do not allow folks in our home, does not mean that we do not want you to know who and where your rats are coming from! This page will be updated yearly, and will contain photos and/or videos of our rattery as well as our most up-to-date serology test results.

Although we no longer keep our ratties in a separate building with an independent AC unit, we will leave this information here in case it helps someone!
We highly recommend the TempStick for monitoring spaces you keep pets in (i.e. trailers, RVs, independent standalone buildings, basements, etc). We can access the temperature in the room anytime we want by simply opening the app, and have it set to send us both text and emails alerts if the temperature goes over or under a set temp. It also graphs temperature trends in your space. This thing has been a lifesaver and worth every penny. Fair warning, it runs about $150, but we find it to be well worth it. You can buy it on Amazon, here.

Our rats are preventatively treated with Revolution. We treat every 2-3 months to be on the safe side (it kills mites, lice, fleas, ticks and many internal parasites) since these things can sometimes be tracked in with their bedding.

Meet the Breeder
Original established in 1999, Little Heroes Rattery operated successfully in Southern California for many years. In 2021, after a lengthy hiatus, 'HERO' is back! We have since relocated to sunny Orlando, Florida, and have reestablished ourselves under the same name. Our lines are all new (to us) - but since we obtained excellent rats, we should be able to offer the same level of quality.
My name is Rachel! I am a mother to 5 human children, several cats, one tarantula, and a plethora of rats.
Random Facts About Me:
I am trained as a Birth Doula (DONA) and as an End-of-Life Doula (INELDA).
I was born in the mountains of New England, but raised on the beachy shores of Southern California - and have travelled everywhere in between. Road trips feed my soul - and my children have had the opportunity to visit major landmarks and hidden treasures from the coast of Maine to California.
I am an avid knitter, advanced sewist, beginning hand-embroiderer and general crafter.
(During the onset of Covid I sewed and donated over 1,000 masks to essential works in hospitals,
police stations, hospices and prisons).
I read tarot cards and bones. Used to do this professionally, but now only dabble for me and mine.
I love animals and operated a (primarily) dog rescue for many years (Little Heroes Rescue) back home in SoCal. I specialized in animals listed as 'aggressive', 'will bite' and 'caution' (here's the secret: most of them were just scared).
I also frequently pulled animals who required surgery or had disabilities - and hand-raised more litters than I can remember.
I have worked in wildlife rescue & rehabilitation, and have cared for everything from horses, to skunks, to birds, to raccoons.
In my 20's, I worked as a Veterinary Technician.
I have trained dogs for Search and Rescue, Narcotics Detection and Protection work. Some of my dogs have gone on to work at police departments and as Service Dogs! I went to France for 5 weeks to train as a Decoy (but it is not a career I have decided to pursue).
I enjoy the indoors with a nice cup of tea and a good book; or the outdoors during cooler months.
I'm learning how to play the banjo.
I am an avid reader and an aspiring author.
I'm a pretty open book!
